Exploring the Berner-Oberland Region: A Family Trip to Switzerland

Recently, we embarked on a six-day family trip through the picturesque Berner-Oberland region of Switzerland. From navigating transportation to savoring local delights, every moment was infused with awe and excitement. It was an exhilarating Swiss adventure, filled with breathtaking views, charming villages, and unforgettable experiences.

Getting Around & Survival Hacks:

Alright, first things first – getting around in Switzerland. For our exploration of the Berner-Oberland region, we opted for the Berner-Oberland train pass combined with the Swiss Half Fare Card, a savvy choice that granted us flexibility and cost savings on train travel. This train pass covered our train and cable car travel throughout the Berner-Oberland region. Pro tip: Watch Aplins in the Alps’ insightful video for an in-depth guide to Swiss train pass options. They have tons of Swiss travel tips, so definitely check them out!

Oh, and another hot tip: Co-Ops are your lifesavers for affordable grub. Swiss dining can burn a hole in your pocket, so stock up on picnic goodies and quick bites whenever you pass by this market! Their prepackaged meals and salads were delicious and their bread aisle had the most delicious flakey croissants.

Lucerne: Gateway to Beauty:

Our family trip kicked off in Lucerne, a city steeped in history and framed by breathtaking vistas. As we strolled along the shores of Lake Lucerne, the beauty of the surroundings left us spellbound. After a leisurely lunch at an open-air restaurant, we retired for the night at The Renaissance Lucerne, a charming abode offering comfort and convenience.

Mürren: Cozy Village Vibes:

Next stop: Mürren! We chose it over Lauterbrunnen for that small-town charm, and let me tell you, it did not disappoint. Hotel Eiger was our cozy nest with killer views of the Alps. This hotel exceeded our expectations with posh accommodations and exceptional service. We loved exploring the nearby village of Grimmelwald and munching on farm-fresh cheese from the honor-based pay stands at the local farms. Total bliss! And let's not forget the Pension Grimmelwald's biergarten – talk about a slice of heaven. Sipping on David Waterhouse's award-winning Schwarz Mönch beer while soaking in those epic views? Pure magic!

Adventures Galore:

Mürren had us on our toes with epic hikes to the Allmendhubel alpine playground and sweeping cable car rides to iconic spots like the Schilthorn (even if the clouds shrouded the epic views on that particular day). A day trip to Wengen led us to the Jungfrau Ski Region Lodge in Männlichen, where breathtaking vistas and another epic playground awaited. From here we hiked the Panorama Trail to Kleine Scheidegg train station which offered more unparalleled views, punctuating our journey with moments of pure awe. Once arriving at Kleine Scheidegg station, you can hop on the train back down to Lauterbrunnen. This hike is a do-not-miss!!

Reaching New Heights:

Now, let's talk about the highlight – paragliding over Lauterbrunnen valley! It was an adrenaline rush like no other. Gliding over the Swiss Alps, waving to Gimmelwald biergarten goers below and flying past the Lauterbrunnen waterfall high above the valley – unforgettable doesn't even begin to cover it!

We booked our paragliding adventure with Airtime Paragliding. The pilots were fun, professional, and prioritized safety. I highly recommend paragliding while in Switzerland. This sport is so much a part of Swiss culture that the 50 CHF bank note even features an image of a paraglider soaring though the Alps!

Olivia, our 12-year-old daredevil, had a blast paragliding over the Lauterbrunnen Valley.

Our Swiss adventure wasn't just about ticking off sights; it was about bonding as a family amidst nature's wonders. Those memories – from epic hikes to heart-pounding paraglides – are etched in our hearts forever. Switzerland's beauty will forever hold a special place in our hearts, a testament to the power of travel to enrich and unite us.

xo, Michelle
